Thought for Today:   “Science is fun. Science is curiosity. We all have natural curiosity. Science is a process of investigating. It's posing questions and coming up with a method. It's delving in.” Sally Ride

On This Day in History: 1970, Apollo 13, the third lunar landing mission, is successfully launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Apollo 13 carried astronauts James A. Lovell, John L. Swigert, and Fred W. Haise. The spacecraft’s destination was the Fra Mauro highlands of the moon, where the astronauts were to explore the Imbrium Basin and conduct geological experiments. After an oxygen tank exploded on the evening of April 13, however, the new mission objective became to get the Apollo 13 crew home alive.

Dear Parent or Guardian of Freshmen:

We are fast approaching the end of the year and the end of junior high for our Freshmen. We appreciate the support and guidance you have given your child and are looking forward to a strong and successful conclusion to the school year. The purpose of this letter is to encourage you to attend some of our upcoming freshman events. We welcome parents at these events and hope that you will be able to join your son or daughter in attending them.

1.     The Freshman Showcase will occur in the afternoon on May 16. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend and observe their student’s presentation. Parents are also welcome to serve on a Showcase Panel. This requires a commitment of time from 12:30 – 3:30 pm and parents will be placed on a panel in their son or daughter’s presentation room.  If you wish to serve on a panel at the Showcase please sign up by May 3, 2019 using the following link:

      http://tinyurl.com/freshmanshowcase2019signups

Friends and family members are also welcome to attend just the presentation for your son/daughter or stay and observe your son or daughter’s friends’ presentations. This is a wonderful opportunity to observe the tremendous growth our freshmen have made, and I strongly encourage you to attend this event.

Please encourage your student to dress up for the Showcase Presentation, and to finish junior high in good standing.   As we get closer to the event, our program will be printed and it will list which classroom your child has chosen as their presentation location.  Programs will be available for you when you arrive on May 16th at 12:15 pm.

  1.  Another important family event is the Freshman Celebration on Tuesday, June 11th.  This celebration will occur in the Harper Gym at 6:30 pm and will include the presentation of our larger awards and recognition for all freshmen.   Dessert will be served in the MPR, and students will have an opportunity to sign yearbooks together.

  1.  June 12th is the Freshman Trip to Discovery Park in Vallejo, California.  We leave Harper at 8:30 am and return at approximately 5:45 pm. Stay tuned for future details.

Best wishes,

DAVIS SENIOR HIGH TO TEST GENERATORS

Davis Senior High is closed today because our school is experiencing a total power failure due to an outage in our power infrastructure. Classes and on-campus events are canceled. However, any athletic games and practices that were scheduled at off site locations will continue as planned.

DJUSD has been working with PG&E since late Sunday evening to find a resolution to this power outage. As the regular power infrastructure cannot be repaired today, the school has brought in generators to power lighting, phones, fire alarms, safety systems and other necessary systems to enable us to open campus. Testing of this auxiliary power shall occur later this evening.

Look for further updates from me before 8:00 p.m. with more information. Updates are available on the Davis Senior High website, the DJUSD website, District’s Facebook and other social media.

Due to a failure of key power infrastructure, Davis Senior High School will be closed on Monday, April 8, 2019. We do not expect a substantive update about the duration of this outage until midday Monday. The phone system is down at the campus; if you need assistance please email DSHS staff directly or contact the District office at 530-757-5300. Additional information will be posted to the District’s Facebook page and website as it is available.

Thought for Today:   "Don't ever be afraid to show off your true colors." - Anonymous

Moments in History: Hedy Lamarr, film actress and Hollywood icon; invented technology used for wireless communications and was inducted in the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Lamarr wasn’t a trained scientist but she became the first woman to receive the BULBIE Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award at the National Invention Convention’s awards ceremony, aka the Oscars of inventing. Along with co-inventor and composer George Antheil, they originally developed a “Secret Communications System” to help defeat the Nazis in World War II, but it was first used in the Cuban Missile Crisis. The device changed radio frequencies to keep enemies from decoding messages, however, it paved the way for the technology we use today.

Thought for Today:   “Race, gender, religion, sexuality, we are all people and that's it. We're all people. We're all equal.” - Connor Franta

Moments in History: British chemist, Rosalind Franklin, a British chemist, is best known for her role in the discovery of the structure of DNA, and for her pioneering use of X-ray diffraction.

January 1951, Franklin  took pictures of DNA and discovered that there were two forms of it, a dry "A" form and a wet "B" form. One of the X-ray diffraction pictures of the "B" form of DNA, known as Photograph 51, became famous as critical evidence in identifying the structure of DNA. The photo was acquired through 100 hours of X-ray exposure from a machine Franklin herself had refined.
