Adopt a Child or Family

The holidays are almost upon us, and although we have much to be thankful for, we cannot forget the significant needs of so many families and children in our Harper community. This year, we have identified many Harper families, or individual students, who can really use our help. We have families that range from just one child to five school age children, including some children who are homeless or living in Shelters.

For the past many years we have been blessed to have numerous classrooms and Harper families, “Adopt a Family” or “Adopt an Individual Child”.    This year we are once again seeking individuals or families, or classrooms, to once again, “Adopt a Family.” With this in mind, we are also considering a number of different ways you may assist or get involved.

Please let Ms. Kerin Kelleher or Ms. Liza Lopez know, through email or a phone call, as soon as possible, if you would like to participate as a donor in one of the options listed below:

  1. Adopt-a-Family:  Provide the entire family with some food, basic household items and gifts.  (We will provide the sizes and a general list of needed food items.)
  2. Adopt-a-Child: Collect gifts, clothing, and/or money that could be used to purchase gifts/clothing for just one child.  (Food and household items will not be needed.)
  3. Adopt-a-Family with another group:  example, two or more families might join together to adopt a single family.  (We will provide the sizes and a general list of needed food items.)
  4. Collect food or household items to be donated to a local family or the local food bank. (These items could be organized into a gift basket to be given to a family.)
  5. Donate a gift card from Save Mart, Target, Safeway or Walmart, or?

If you choose to participate, items will need to be brought to Harper between Nov. 26, 2018 – Dec. 10, 2018.   Please bring gifts wrapped and labeled.   Our goal is to collect all contributions and deliver them by Friday, December 14, 2018.

If you elect to “Adopt- a Family,” will provide you with a description of the family, without naming names, and a list of suggestions.  Please email Kerin Kelleher and Liza Lopez to let us know that you are interested.

Thank you so much for your consideration!

-Kerin Kelleher

Dear Community Members,

We are in need of individuals to volunteer on our Career Day, Thursday, February 14th

We ask that you come to campus at 9:45 for a light breakfast and be willing to stay until noon. You can forward this email to interested parties and ask that they sign up through the link below. More information will be provided to volunteers as the date approaches.

Other FAQ about Career Day:
What should I discuss with students?
Here are possible topics: an explanation of your job, typical work day, the work environment, education/training needed to pursue this career, salary range, your interest in this field, an interesting story or experience related to your work.

 How long should I present?
You will be part of a panel of adults (generally 2-3 total) and will each have approximately 7-10 minutes to present. There will also be time for Q & A.

Will I be able to use PowerPoint or other tech?
Yes, many presenters in the past have brought a flash drive to campus with a presentation to show students. Please let me know if you need any special accommodations (ngallaudet@djusd.net

You can always forward any other questions to: ngallaudet@djusd.net

Thank you,

Nick Gallaudet
