Thought for Today:   “Science is fun. Science is curiosity. We all have natural curiosity. Science is a process of investigating. It's posing questions and coming up with a method. It's delving in.” Sally Ride

On This Day in History: 1970, Apollo 13, the third lunar landing mission, is successfully launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Apollo 13 carried astronauts James A. Lovell, John L. Swigert, and Fred W. Haise. The spacecraft’s destination was the Fra Mauro highlands of the moon, where the astronauts were to explore the Imbrium Basin and conduct geological experiments. After an oxygen tank exploded on the evening of April 13, however, the new mission objective became to get the Apollo 13 crew home alive.

Harper community, this week is Safety Week.  We will have safety drills on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week, which you will hear more about in your second period classes.  It is vital that we all take time to practice these procedures in the unlikely event of an emergency.  Our evacuation drill will be this Wednesday, April 10th during 2nd period, at around 10:50am.  Students will also be practicing our evacuation route with their PE classes on Friday.  Thank you for participating in keeping Harper safe!

Harper Track and Field: Track practice starts on Monday, April 15th at 4pm at the tables.  Do not be late and show up ready to practice with running shoes and athletic wear (PE clothes).  Practice will end before 5:30.  Coach Hailey will meet you there and give you the details for the day and for the rest of the season. You must have your current physical and paperwork turned in by this Friday, April 12th in order to participate.

Dear Parent or Guardian of Freshmen:

We are fast approaching the end of the year and the end of junior high for our Freshmen. We appreciate the support and guidance you have given your child and are looking forward to a strong and successful conclusion to the school year. The purpose of this letter is to encourage you to attend some of our upcoming freshman events. We welcome parents at these events and hope that you will be able to join your son or daughter in attending them.

1.     The Freshman Showcase will occur in the afternoon on May 16. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend and observe their student’s presentation. Parents are also welcome to serve on a Showcase Panel. This requires a commitment of time from 12:30 – 3:30 pm and parents will be placed on a panel in their son or daughter’s presentation room.  If you wish to serve on a panel at the Showcase please sign up by May 3, 2019 using the following link:

      http://tinyurl.com/freshmanshowcase2019signups

Friends and family members are also welcome to attend just the presentation for your son/daughter or stay and observe your son or daughter’s friends’ presentations. This is a wonderful opportunity to observe the tremendous growth our freshmen have made, and I strongly encourage you to attend this event.

Please encourage your student to dress up for the Showcase Presentation, and to finish junior high in good standing.   As we get closer to the event, our program will be printed and it will list which classroom your child has chosen as their presentation location.  Programs will be available for you when you arrive on May 16th at 12:15 pm.

  1.  Another important family event is the Freshman Celebration on Tuesday, June 11th.  This celebration will occur in the Harper Gym at 6:30 pm and will include the presentation of our larger awards and recognition for all freshmen.   Dessert will be served in the MPR, and students will have an opportunity to sign yearbooks together.

  1.  June 12th is the Freshman Trip to Discovery Park in Vallejo, California.  We leave Harper at 8:30 am and return at approximately 5:45 pm. Stay tuned for future details.

Best wishes,

Kerin Kelleher
